Module 8 online discussions:Exhibit 4: Online safety

Instructions:
Read the following scenario and comment on how you will respond. 

Context:
You have just confiscated a cell phone from one of your learners who was busy having a text chat with someone during class.
  1. Is this a good enough reason to ban mobile devices in the classroom? 
  2. How can we safeguard our students against online bullying? 
  3. What will you do if you were this teacher?

  2. Certainly not....there must be an acceptable use policy that governs how cell phones are used for teaching and learning activities.

  3. Cellphones should not be banned from school. Students need to be taught the proper mobiquette and warned about the danngers of exposing themselves on the net. A proper ICT policy should be put in place and evryone made aware of the procedures.

  4. Online safety - It is important to have an updated and relevant ICT Policy in place so that when irregularities occur it is consulted to address such. In addition to that educate learners about different issues related to online safety from time to time.

  5. The use of social media is not enough for mobile devices to be banned in classroom. Rather, i would suggest that a more contollled measure should be adopted to monitor what social networking activities goes on in the classroom. They should be sensitized and trained and also adviced on how to use social networking to make them better 21st century learners that are able to use the internet for collecting information that is useful for their learning. They should also know the dangers of the social netwoking and how to identify potential dangers and avoid them. By Duma

  6. I will read the ICT policy of the school to the learners especially the part that talks about mobiqqutte. Then will advise them not to talk to strangers especially in social networks. They must not go to isolated places when invited on social media

  12. It is important to use digital devices in a class,but learners should use it authentic.
    There should be clear instructions to draw up their attention ,task to be submitted timeously.
