Phishing is when someone tries to get personal information such as your usernames, passwords, and credit card details (and sometimes, indirectly, money) by pretending to be a trustworthy person or organisation using electronic means like emails or a sms. In this exhibit we will try to see how gullible you are! What are the tell-tale signs of someone trying to con you?
Instructions:
- Read the examples of the following emails and sms's, decide if each one is authentic (real) or not and discuss why you think so.
- If someone were to send you an email and you cannot track that they are who they say they are, what should you do to safeguard yourself? You may consult the resources in your Module 8 folder or the Internet.
- Comment on all the examples in the comment section below.

There are a lot of these messages coming through lately. It is important that we do not fall for it!! Never EVER give out personal information ever!!!
ReplyDeleteIt is important to remember fundamental rules: you can't have won money if you did not enter the competition and no bank or legitimate organisation requests banking details via online forums.
ReplyDeleteExamples 1, 2, 4 and 5 are examples of phishing.
ReplyDeleteNo digital signature, No logo from SARS, requires you to fill information.
Example 3 - there is a logo, do not require me to give ma details online,
All the examples are generally not authentic. Ex 1,for instance does not
ReplyDeletegive a genuine emailaddress, one would expect to go through a sarsefiling.co.za address. Also one does not expect to fill forms online from a source that is supposed to have it.
Phishing is a way that peoaple try to get information about others in order to rob them. This phishers if I may call them use e-mail or sms to acquire information from you or draw your attention. Most of the email is refferedcto as spam/scam mail. The emails will say you either have won a competition, inherited money / loan. But in all you will find that they want you to deposit money first and give them details about yourself and bank accounts e.g exhibit 1 and 4
ReplyDeleteINNOVATORS
Phishing has been an online issue since the age of the use of e-commerce. This is the fraudulent use of replica websites to replace the original websites for the purpose of collecting personal information for later use. One of the ways of promoting phishing is by sending emails to unsuspecting users about an information from places they are customers with. The emails generally ask for information, by giving you a link to click.
ReplyDeleteFrom the gallery walk above, the one from fnb is to only one that is authentic. The reason is that it is the only one that did not ask for information or asking to click a link.
The one that says that you have won money is the most obvious to me. How can you win money you did not enter a draw for? That also applied to the mtn winning. Also, if the letter is authentic, you will usually be addressed by your name or your positions in their company. One way this fraud can reduce is by sensitizing and educating people as much as we can, as most victims are unsuspecting.

ReplyDeletePhishing is an international problem as it knows no boundaries. A person as far as China can trick you in SA and you loose a lot of your hard earned money. It will be costly and difficult to arrest them. Mostly people who are found doing that get less / minimum prison sentence.
ReplyDeleteResponding to phishing attacks means that you confirm that your email and/or cell number is valid and your address and number is added to a database.... rather delete and block the mailer
ReplyDeleteConfidential Information Online = SCAM. Normater how long the story could be.

Be careful of scams ,of phishing you can never win without entering a competition.Sars ca never communicate like that .Never disclose your personal particulars to strangers
ReplyDeleteAll but FNB are spam. A reputable company would not ask for confidential info and would not have spelling mistakes in their communication!
ReplyDeleteYou have to take care of your personal information it must be confidential. Dont be tempted by messages that need your personal information
ReplyDeleteOne has to be extra careful with the sms that claims she/ he has won yet he didnt enter any competition.
